The perfect gift for a potential writer, a writer who is stuck and anyone who would like to learn from a Juno winner/Grammy nominated/6 time winner at the Canadian Folk Music Awards… a highly decorated career songwriter.
Don't delay! 20 students max.

A casual lecture about songwriting - how to get going, how to say what you want (underlying theme or message) how to let  the story unfold,  style, lyrical content, to rhyme or not to rhyme, dynamics, how to write from only a great line …q and a and more.
'Flashes of inspiration are rare, mysterious, fleeting and sacred. They can be the most thrilling aspect of songwriting - and the most elusive. I believe the jolt of inspiration is your soul talking. It has something to say. We’ll discuss how to encourage these lightning bolts to arrive more often, how to capture them, and how to build off of them to bring a song into the world. My favourite way songwriting is to ‘write from the title’. I do this by grabbing the gift of the lightning bolt, and using it as my starting point for the rest of the song. I try to solve the puzzle that the title presents! I defend my thesis by wringing out every possible colour, emotion, essence and subtext, to create a song that is hopefully emotionally present, cinematic and relatable. We’ll explore this method together, so that you can create the song that the initial inspiration hinted at. Once the lightning stops, the real journey begins! We’ll talk about power structures in rhyming patterns, verses, bridges and choruses. We’ll discuss “prosody” – the combining of lyric and music to create atmosphere. My songwriting friend James Keelaghan refers to me as “The Song Doctor”, because I love helping writers get unstuck. If you have a song that is not thriving, it would be my pleasure to help you mend it, possibly even finish it, so it can live a long beautiful life, expressing exactly what you want to express.'
