FIGURATIVELY SPEAKING - A Collection of Figurative Artwork
by Janis Miller Hall
Saturday, April 26 - Friday, May 16

Picture
Janis Miller Hall is an Ottawa-based artist who creates diverse paintings based on experiences that explore people and their environment using a variety of mediums such as oil, pastel and acrylic. She often uses a mixture of traditional painting genres and mediums with contemporary mediums to bring forth a multidimensional quality.
Currently living and working in Ottawa, Canada. Janis enjoys capturing a moment in time so that memories can be shared visually. Her work can be described as “contemporary realism”, depicting people and their surroundings. ‘The places I have been and the people I meet are what inspires me.
A love of drawing prompted me to pursue the study of art at the University of Toronto where I received a bachelor of Art Education and at Sheridan College where I completed a Creative Arts Diploma.’ Janis's work can be found in both public and private collections throughout Canada, the U.S., and the Caribbean including the city of Ottawa’s collection.

This exhibit showcases a collection of figurative artwork inspired by the diverse individuals the artist has encountered. Each piece serves as a tribute to the unique stories, cultures, and emotions that these people carry, captured through vivid portrayals of faces, expressions, and gestures. The works in this collection explore the universal human experience while celebrating the distinctiveness of each encounter. From vibrant street markets to quiet moments, the figures in these paintings reveal layers of humanity—hope, struggle, joy, and resilience—that transcend borders. With oil paint and pastels, rich colour palettes, and intricate details, the artist brings to life not just the physical likeness of those met along the way, but the essence of their spirits. Whether it’s a weathered face etched with the passage of time or the gleaming eyes of youth, every portrait offers a glimpse into a world of stories that often go untold, reminding us of the connections that bind us all.
