Basic Watercolour Techniques

  1. 1. Introduction: Supplies and Techniques:
            Wet on wet; wet on dry; dry brush. 
            Still Life Project with negative background

2.  Colour Theory: (basic -primary, secondary, analogous, complementary, value scale, intensity; colours: staining, transparent, opaque, mixing colours, etc.  
Finish background from last week’s stil
l life.    
Washes and Skies:  Learn basic wash, graded wash, variegated wash.  With this create four or more different skies.   Creating white areas and rocks.

.  Trees:   Details:  bark, trunks, shapes.  
Wet on wet. 
Blocking in light. Negative space.  Water reflections.  Carrot people.    
​Project:  landscape using all of these techniques.

4.  Floral: Sunflower or Tulip.  Detailed and loose.  Work through using design and composition rules, plan and paint. Negative background.

SUPPLY LIST
PAINTS: 
Recommendation DaVinci, QOR or Winsor Newton
Colours recommended for a basic palette:
YELLOW:      Hansa Yellow   -  cold
                           Indian Yellow    -   warm
RED:                Alizarin Crimson   -   warm
                           Red Rose (optional)   - cold  (sometimes difficult to find)
BLUE:              Indigo and/or Indanthrene blue                                 
GREEN:         Sap Green
Other colours:    Optional  -Nickel Azo gold, shadow green…..
 
BRUSHES:
Round:                #10 or 12 or higher  -  one of these (the #12 or larger) is enough to start. 
Flat:                    ¾ , 1” or 1 ½” or even larger.  One is enough to start.
A couple of small paint brushes from hardware store and 2”  sponge work well for wetting the paper.
 
PAPER:  Arches or Fabriano - large sheets of 140 lb. Medium.   This will be enough for quite a few paintings.
!!!THIS IS THE MOST IMPORTANT ITEM - MAKE SURE YOU BUY quality paper!!!   Don’t try to use up whatever paper you have…..you will only get discouraged!!
The most economical would be to purchase large (24x30”) sheets and cut to appropriate size/shape.  

OTHER:  Masking tape, paper towels, pencils, kneaded eraser, palette (or corelle plate or paper palette), support board (piece of coroplast or thin wood), roll of toilet paper.

** If you prefer to wait before buying a lot of supplies, you borrow Ann's brushes, paints, etc. for the first class and try them out.
